Temperature dependence of the mutation rate towards antibiotic resistance

  17 June 2024

The study examines how temperature changes, such as fever, affect the mutation rate towards antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli. Results show that temperature-dependent mutation rates are affected by fever, with fever temperatures reducing ampicillin resistance and increasing ciprofloxacin and rifampicin resistance. This suggests that optimizing combinations of antibiotics and fever suppression strategies could be a new approach to combat antibiotic resistance, highlighting the importance of temperature in bacterial growth.
